Step 5 - AA

From the "12 x 12"

"Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs"

short form

"Twelve Steps deflate ego. Step 5 is difficult but necessary to sobriety and peace of mind. Confession is an ancient discipline. Without fearless admission of defects, few could stay sober. What do we receive from Step 5? Begginning of true kinship with man and God. Lose sense of isolation, receive forgiveness and give it; learn humility; gain honesty and realism about ourselves. Necessity for complete honesty. Danger of rationalization. How to choose the person in whom to confide. Results are tranquility and consciousness of God. Oneness with God and man prepares us for following Steps."

This Step is slow in coming for me. When I first joined AA, just simply saying that I am an alcoholic seemed to fulfill the goal hear. In an outpatient program I was asked to do a timeline and present it to the group. I was so nervous, I felt my face going numb! I also found myself minimizing. I am progressing toward accomplishing step 5. Although I am not there yet, just these little moments of truth have brought me peace and tranquility. That is nothing I ever thought I would find by admitting my defects.

Hi, everyone. I just did most of step 5 with my sponsor last weekend. She asked me to add God to my list, and to think about anyone I may have forgotten. We were supposed to meet about it tonight, but life happened, so it will have to wait until the weekend again. I think God is dragging this out as long as possible, until I can finally say "your will not mine" and mean it.

Because most of the time I don't....

Life is coming at me, and I don't know if I can accept it on its own terms. But rather than scare me off and send me packing, the fifth step has taken me one more small step away from the edge of oblivion. Life out there is pretty scary, but I don't have to be able to handle life right now. I'll focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Listening to my sponsor, doing the work, going to meetings, being of service, reading the BB, prayer & meditation. Nothing else. For me, at the moment, everything else is a distraction, another attempt to take control or run away.
