Second Step - Al-Anon

Step Two - Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity

From: How Al-Anon Works - pg 48.
(copyrigt 1995, by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., Limited use by express written permission of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.)

Some os us get an inkling that there might be a power that can do what we, by ourselves, cannot, when we first attend an Al-Anon meeting and actually experience a moment of relief from our suffering. Having walked through the door feeling anxious and confused, unsure about what we were looking for, we are often surprised to find ourselves feeling better and more at peace by the time we leave. Even if we were furious, shame-filled, or guilt-ridden, there is something anazing, something transforming, that happens at an Al-Anon meeting.
We can't quite put our finger on what that "something" is or why we come away with a greater sense of peace than we walked in with. But it feels too good to ignore. So we go to another meeting and discover that that "something" is still there. Maybe, just maybe, we have found some sort of power that could do for us what we haven't been able to do for ourselves. We come to believe that there could be a power greater than ourselves, a power greater than alcoholism.

How do you feel about Step Two?

Step One was hard for me because I didn't want to be powerless. Then came Steo Two that sounded a lot like religion and I wanted no part of religion or God.

But I had accepted my powerlessness and I felt better after a meeting so I was willing to try.

Listening at the tables helped me realize how insane my thinking, my actions and my re-actions had become. Sometimes I was crazier than the a.

I started "acting as if" I believed and started saying the Serenity Prayer in the morning. The tables became the Power in my life and my sponsor said that was ok. I reached out to others and tried to do what worked for them.

Slowly I felt better and my life was better whether the a was drinking or not. I started believing that there was something working in my life.

I have a Higher Power in my life today. Sometimes it's still the tables - sometimes Good Orderly Direction - and sometimes an inner feeling of peace and that I am not alone.

I don't know yet what or who my Higher Power is and that's ok. I only need to know that I have one.

Step 2 came as a relief to me. I knew I was powerless over my problems and people but that was all I knew when I came into recovery. So when I got to step 2 it was the solution to my dilemma. Even though I couldn't solve my problems in my own strength, there was a power greater than mine that could. What a relief...

Now I had to work on trusting my Higher Power with all my cares and concerns, knowing that He would bring the results, and I needed to be open minded to recieve them and then accept them....Not always in my time, but in the time necessary to bring about the right solution.

I've always wanted things right now, and step two has helped me to slow down and wait for God's will to be done. Letting go and letting God is an on-going process that I have to practice every day and in every situation. It does take a load off my shoulders though... knowing that I am no longer in control of the outcome -- that my new role is being a human being and not playing god in my life or other's lives.

Step 2--

When I could no longer hold my head up on my own, I found myself pleading for help from my HP. Due to the way my life has taken so many unforseen turns, we kinda lost touch. Not because of my HP leaving me but me leaving my HP. When I fell to my knees I felt the powerlessness( step 1). When I begged for my HP to help me, and asked for guidance is my step 2.
We dont have to go through lifes problems by ourselves. OUr HP is right there by our sides if we ask. I truely feel that we all need to not only beg for mercy and help and guidance from our HP but to thank our HP when our prayers have been answered. It is a simple "Thank- you" to show gratitude for your HP. I try to thank my HP often. Even if it is simple as a stop light turning green, and I am late for church, I give thanks.

these are just my thoughts
thanks
