From the 12 suggested steps of Emotions Anonymous:
Step 1: "We admitted we were powerless over our emotions - that our lives had become unmanageable."
Some quotes from Emotions Anonymous (EA) literature:
(pg. 13 self-titled Emotions Anonymous book) :
"In our search for self-worth and identity, we may have unknowingly set unrealistic ideals and goals for ourselves. Because our ideals are too high, and we can never live up to these unrealistic expectations, our sense of self-worth is low. How can we but fail?"
ML SPEAKING: Think about the things you say to yourself. Are you an 'all or nothing' thinker. Does everything have to be perfect? Does everything in your life have to be a big drama, a catastrophe, a conflict, an emotional rollercoaster? Is your glass half empty or half full. Is everybody ignoring your 'direction' and 'control'. Do you try to 'control' yourself or others with rage, anger, silence, fear, or whatever emotion gets you what you want? Are some of your emotions 'extreme'. Are you into blaming everyone and everything else for your troubles? Do you really hate or dislike yourself and feel worthless? Are you a 'future' addict...as in 'when my ship comes in...or when this happens or that happens....I'll be happy"......are you numbing out emotionally by distracting yourself by doing too much of any other activities?
"Our physical wellbeing is affected by our thoughts, attitudes, and emotions. Some of us have tried to avoid getting help for our emotional problems by questioning whether we have a physical illness, a mental illness or a spiritual illness."
(pg. 14 self-titled Emotions Anonymous book) :"In Emotions Anonymous......we stop using our feelings of uniqueness as an excuse. We stop comparing ourselves with others. We stop blaming ourselves and others. We stop feeling sorry for ourselves, being defiant, and denying our illness. We stop making excuses and trying to convince ourselves we are different from others. These kinds of behaviors prevent us from being honest."
The first step is about getting honest with one's self about our own powerlessness in regards to our emotional beingness. We're all human, we all have emotions, but if our emotions are making us feel or act sick, thereby hurting ourselves and others, it's time to look at it honestly.
Emotions Anonymous holds hope. First we need to get 'honest' to the best of our ability and admit we just might be 'powerless' over our emotions based on our life's results so far.

I had never heard of Emotions Anonymous until I read this post. I was raised by an A father and have been in relationships with A's before, but I have never felt completely at home with ACOA or CoDA or Al Anon. This makes sense to me. This is where I am lost and out of control.
Thank you for posting. JL

Anyone wanna pick back up on dialogue on this thread? Its good stuff.I am basicly a false-ego/matter/whatever feels good addict who is usually abstinent from heavy intoxicant abuse(though not always) yet am still struggling with the fact that I just may begin self-medicating with various narcotic herbs and/"power plants" again though I pray for my Higher Powers will many times daily(and these natural substances seem to me purpose-serving medicines with often-too-heavy side effects...not just all bad by any means - often even "God-generating")andbutso Emotions Anonymous seems right up my alley right now because wether Im still experimenting with God-given psychotropics or not I can perhaps still work a spiritual-principle-based program. And yeah I suffer emotionally and lash out at ppl alot.Thanks.
