Hi. I've been trying to quit drinking. I've heard about the 12 step program, AA, etc. However, I see myself as very prideful. I can't bring myself to go to AA meetings. I figured this would be the next best thing. I'm hoping to get some support and meet some new friends.

Hi Trace,
Well, you are right where you are supposed to be. That means that you feel exactly the way I felt and even sometimes still feel every time I go to a meeting. A.A. works and it works very well for so many people that is Why it has been so succesful for so many years.
When you say that you are prideful. A.A. The Big BOok, The 12 by 12 book and a SPonsor, meetings, and doing your 12-steps is a beautiful New Life without booze or drugs. Just give us a try. If you don't like your first meeting, then go to a different one thatyou do like, but keep going. What we are told is to go to 90-90. That means one a day for 90 days and it is goooood for the drinker. Read the Big Book, the Alcoholics Anonymous book from the xx's to page 163. You will understand whether you are or you are not alcoholic and you will relate to some of the stories if you are anything like us.
The books I am referring to can be purchased on-line or at any meeting for around $7.00. SOmetimes because your new someone if you say that it's your first meeting they will give you one free with the 12x12 to get you started. But you need a sponsor so look at the literature about SPonsorship, then start looking for one right away. Calling as many alcoholics on those phone lists as you can.
Well, I do pray that this has given you some help and that you will take the steps tomarrow.
Lord, go with her strengthening her along her journey. Amen

Trace - this is my first post, and I welcome you. At facetoface meetings, someone usually says "you're the most important person here".
Alcohol led me to AA, AA led me to God.
You are not alone! This is a mighty big boat, and all the other passengers have walked the same path. The details may be different - oh yeah, but this IS the easier softer way.
Can you get a Big Book?
I confess that I've come here because I'm about to become a probationer. After 13 years, I went back out. The disease is PROGRESSIVE, but again I say you are not alone. Not only do you have the Group, God (or whatever you call your Higher Power) has your back.
Be at Peace. You're right where you're s'posed to be. Sometimes I feel as if AA is a cult, but who cares? It works!
We'll love you so you can learn to love yourself.
