Step three - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
Not being a religious person, this step was a major stumbling block in my recovery. I tried but it seemed to me I failed because my will kept getting in the way.
An AA friend suggested I kneel down and say the Third Step Prayer from the AA Big Book - ask for his help ever morning - say thank you at night - and go on with my life. By doing this I've turned my life and will over and until I kneel down and take tham back my Higher Power is in charge. ( If I let him. :):)
This helped me understand that I was still the same person - that I wouldn't get well overnight and I had a lot of work to do if I wanted recovery.
Steps four thru nine are the action steps that allowed me to learn what turning my will and life over to a Higher Power meant and what recovery was all about.
I asked for help every morning and anytime during the day that life got tough and went on to Step Four. I began to feel that I was not alone. I also began to realize that when I stopped trying to fix everyone else and kept the focus on me, my life continued to get better.
Today my life is good as long as I get out of the way and remember that I'm not in charge.

Yes, I agree. I do this Third Step prayer, too, though I no longer have AA's big book. (I use the SLAA book though.) This goes back to what we were talking about with the second step.... I thought both the second and third steps were "no-brainers" for me because I am a pastor, theologian, and spirituality is always deeply important to who I am and how I live, whether I am in or out of the program.... But it's been a LONG TIME since I got down on my knees and prayed formally. I thought I was following the biblical injunction to "pray without ceasing" by just conversing with God throughout the day and night no matter what I was doing.... But the Third Step prayer is a humble and conscious act that is really different from what I've been doing in my spiritual life in the last few years, and it reminds me of Who is really in charge if I want to be sane.... I do need to humble myself and ask for help, not try to do it on my own.
