New Adult Child...

Hello.

I don't quite know where to start... I am familiar with the 12-steps, as I am a substance abuse therapist. I have applied the principles of steps 1, 2, and 3 to various areas of my life with positive results. I am very interested to begin formally working the steps, and I need a sponsor to guide me. There are no ACoA meetings anywhere around my area, and Al-Anon meetings are quite a distance from me. I have lurked in a few online meetings, and hope to do so more often. Not sure what else to say... :)

awwDear Justm,

I have read what you wrote and am a bit confused about what you are asking for. The 12-steps for Alcohol, drugs, or AL-anon or all of them?

I have been in Recovery for quite a while. I have worked the steps and am still working them. I have a clean time of 13.8 years.

I only work the AA program but I am aware of Alanons program. However it isn't my program. I am however a child of an alcoholic, a sister of an alcoholic, and a Mother of an alcoholic.

Take a look at the steps here on line. Then go over to the other message board. Check it out!

Hi Again Melanie,

Then you can go to the other sight and ask one of the Moderators. They may give you more direction and help you. There are some great message boards and meetings here. They also have books that you can purchase.

How about praying for you! Do you mind?
Dear Heavenly Father, We ask in your Son's name to guide, bring Wisdom, and show favor. to this Woman. Make her HEART open and ready to Work the 12-Steps and apply them to her life. Lord you are the Author, and Perfector in our Lives. We seek you in all that we do today and always. As a man thinketh in his mind so is he in his "HEART." Proverbs

In Jesus name,
Amen

Hiya I can really identify with where you are at - I also work in the field and have some understanding of the steps.  I am not an addict but have my own personal experience of addict/alcoholic in my life.

I really want to work through the steps as I believe that for me they will give me a choice of direction in which to live my life - but again like you I am not sure about what to do.  Im not sure about getting to a meeting and feel more comfortable with working through my issues in a more anonymous forum such as this.

Anyway hope we can both find what we need - I think this site might just hold some keys.

All the best

Anne

hey justmelanie!
i hope you find what you need. i use these forums as there is no meeting nearer than 2 hours. it works ok, nothing like face to face. in face to face the diversity of people, faiths and higher power ideas is much more evident in my experience. there is a feeling of love in the room that is unlike anything else.there is also a lot of diversity here and we can take what we like and leave the rest. i find the step board the most helpfull, the message board tends to be for venting which is necessary, but for me it can have the effect of reinforcing my blaming tendancies, so i try to use it carefully. the lovely thing about the step work is, it is focused on the solution, which for someone like me, who tends to focus on the problem, is a godsend (literaly!). i can't help you with the sponsor bit as i am without one myself at the moment. but i can and do wish all the best in your recovery and i hope you stay connected here as every members sharing helps.

Hi Anne and Florence,

Step One: We admitted we were powerless over ALcohol ? ? ? that our lives had become unmanageable.

When working the first step for me I have to read all the first portion of up to and through all the xxxvv's then THe DR's Opinion is the first step in the BIG BOOK , doing it along with the 12x12 book. IT is a good idea to have a SPOnsor but I am still waiting for GOd to put the right woman in my life after loosing my Sponsor a year ago to Brain Cancer.

I will be praying for us all to come into contact with the face to face Sponsor we need. Right now mine is GOD.
Thanks
Pam

Welcome to MIP anne and justmelanie, btw I know what Adult Child means, and I am one too.

THere is a general site for all the groups at MIP. ACA has its own board which you can navigate to by going to MIP's main page http://www.12stepforums.net

We have 4 online meetings each week as well. Mondays @ 930 pm EST, Tues and THurs @ 7 pm Est, and Sundays @ 3 pm est.

Finding a sponser is a difficult task. Someone mentioned Big Book, and it just so happens ACA has its own Big Book now!  You can go to http://www.adultchild.org to buy it

peace

hi justmelanie , Alanon and ACOA are quite closely related I think , so you could try what other people have suggested here and also putting up these posts on different boards might attract someone who is available to sponsor . If you can't get to a meeting you could always try the open AA meetings , that is recommended to Alanons and ACOA , and there would be people there that could help you to make links ,

good luck in your seeking  !
