Welcome to MIP!

Finding your first sponsor can be a bit of a challenge.  What program are you in?  Are you attending meetings regularly?

At first I wanted to find someone "like" me - looked like me, worked like me, drank like me . . . someone who would "understand" and co-sign my bs.  Finally I realized with some guidance that I really wanted to find someone who "had what I wanted".  Those people in the rooms that exhibited true recovery - the calm, understanding, non-judgemental, follow the steps kind of people.  Didn't matter age, job - none of it.

Then all I had to do was walk up and say these words . . . "Would you sponsor me?".

Now - don't take "No" personally.  Some folks are busy with sponsorship or don't feel ready.  Move on to the next.  The right one will come along.

Are you visiting our other boards?

Welcome, please keep coming back.

Tricia

I was one of those people who thought I didnt need a sponsor , if mine hadnt volunteered herself at the time I was in crisis I probably still wouldnt have one .  she is so invaluable to me I can only thank her for what she has done for me by doing it for others ,she listened , shook my up when i needed it , a foot in the rear occasionally but always loved and cared for me .
I stayed with her because she had what i wanted  , she staying in her marriage  , laughed alot and attended alot of meetings every week , where she went I went .. her fav saying was call me before you shoot .
Look for someone who has what you want ,someone who talkes about the steps , who continues to attend meetings f2f someone u feel u can trust with the real YOU. you may have to go to different meetings to find her but there is someone out there waiting to be asked . sponsors are a guide they dont tell u what to do they show us we have choices and we get to choose which way to go , if we choose the wrong solution they love us anyway. Stick with the winners is what i was told and for me those were the ones who laughed alot , mostly at them selves , who were at meeting s even after yrs of recovery they chose to stay and help others , if they went to conventions so did I ..take your time u will find who u need .  good luck Louise
One thing that helped me was an oldtimmer AA said oncethat alone in his own head there was no adult supervision .. so that is not a  good place to be .
