Adult children who are alcoholics

I just came into AlAnon recently. This disease is a generational one in my family and I'm just becoming fully aware of my responsibility to and for myself. I've begun studying Steps one and two and feel I'm current this far...any insights for preserving one's sanity while watching a child destroy himself?
