Step 6 for ACoA

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

We don't just have habits. We fall in love with them or define ourselves by them.  If I have to stop pleasing people, stop putting others first, stop going along to get along, then I won't be myself.  So even though we find through working the steps that we need to let go of something, we may not immediately be ready to let go of it.

We need to emotionally prepare ourselves that things are going to be different, that we are going to change, and that an aspect that we have come to know and be comfortable with has to go away.  To work this step, get ready to accept that you are going to be a different you now.  It's scary, but you'll be glad you did.

I had to be ready, and doing the 5th step gave me all the things written right in front of me to be ready to let go of and have HP remove. For me, the trouble was my own awareness as to when they were happening. Jerry says - I didn't know that I didn't know. I still run into that often, and for me, step 6 had a lot of prayer for awareness, the ability to slow down and improve my conscious contact with the HP I was beginning to understand from step 3 - and ask for the help to try my hardest to start to always be ready. Sometimes now I drop out mid sentence - sometimes I don't have to say it at all. Sometimes I still don't truly discover the defects until I do a 10th step (but I wont get ahead here). The main thing is that I am and stay ready. Stay with it/Him.

To have god remove my defects of character. Defensive, avoiding, blaming, hiding, over dependent self destructive, unforgiving, having no higher power the list is long.  Doing the steps Aca way gets me out of victim stance and the thinking that I am not worthy, God says I am and if I believe that I can change mature, look after me and ask god daily for help I am no longer alone.
