9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

We need to make things right. If we create a problem we need to try to fix it. But we shouldn't create new problems in the process of fixing old ones. The Hippocratic Oath says:

I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

the Hippocratic Oath

So when deciding on the making of amends, weigh whether or not doing so will open old wounds for the recipient and also for yourself.

If direct amends would cause harm, consider paying it forward, doing it for someone in your life in the place of the person you would like to make direct amends to.

Most of all my amends were living amends. Some issues I had were resolved through volunteer work, or community programs for children. Above all - I hurt myself the most. 2nd up were my children. As a music teacher - I have lots of opportunities to give back to for not only me - my children - but also the many other children who are living in dysfunction. Today I get the chance to break the cycle. It is a gift!
