Step 1

i attended my second Al-Anon meeting last week, and purchased some books to begin working with. my chest tightens, and I am filled with anxiety every time I am at a meeting, or open a book.  When will the fear of betraying my family of origin stop? My parents are both dead.

Hi Trying Program is a process so that the fear and anxiety lifts for each of us at different times. I know i attended meetings, listening with an open mind without speaking for a few months before the fear lifted and I could share without guilt. Others can connect much sooner. Keep showing up and "trying" :) you are worth it.

We have a main Alanon Board at:  http://alanon.activeboard.com/

Here you can connect with more members who are working program and can so understand

I've gone to a few meetings in the past. Which have helped me get stronger in the past. I haven't worked the program, which hasn't helped me. My addict is now a recovering addict, but little did I realize that I need to recover as well. I'm of living in fear that things will go back to the way they were. And knowing there is no guarantee, scares the wits out of me. A while back, I was told that I need a sponsor to work the steps. So I went back to a meeting last night with an open mind, open ears, and an open heart. For my serenity sake! We talked about step 11. That was a message for me that I need to go back to prayer and meditation. I need to pray for my sponsor.

Dear Sandra, I am happy that you found us and had the courage to share. and it is so very wonderful that your partner has found recovery. I agree that we who live with the disease do need a program of recovery of ourr own. Al-Anon face-to-face meetings offer powerful tools and support in order to recover from living with this disease.

The steps are definitely a powerful tool in our recovery toolbox and I urge you to review them and meditate on them and share your thougths here before you find a sponsor to work them. You can always use the slogans to help you overcome your fears and anxiety.

I have found living one day at a time, keeping the focus on myself, reading Al-Anon literature daily, living and letting live, trusting a higher power, I have been able to grow and change and find serenity. The serenity prayer is also a powerful tool remembering that all we are asking for and all we need is; courage, serenity and wisdom.

Keep coming back .

Dear Hotrod,  thank you for your encouragement.  Tomorrow will be my fifth meeting, and the anxiety is lifting.  I am repeating Step One over and over in my head throughout the day and find it very comforting.

Good work Lee . I am so glad that you stayed with program and that the anxiety is lifting. Love the tool of repeating the First step over and over. It is a terrific meditation .

People use this page to develop some understanding of the Steps and how to incorporate them into our lives. The main Message Board is for sharing our ESH on any topic
