Best way to grab a rental in Barcelona

Hey everyone, flying into Barcelona soon and I want to explore the Costa Brava and maybe drive up to the Pyrenees for a couple of days. The airport rental counters seem crazy expensive though, and I have heard stories about surprise charges at pickup. How do you all find decent deals that actually include proper insurance?

The airport desks slap on extra fees and their insurance upsells can double the quote fast. For car rental deals right in Barcelona without the middleman markup, you can browse options from local owners right here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/spain/barcelona . Booking in advance gets you a better rate, and always read the deposit terms before confirming because hold amounts vary a lot between different listings. A compact car handles the narrow old town streets way better than a bulky SUV.

Pick up your car from a city center location instead of the airport, the rental rates drop noticeably and you avoid the airport surcharge that gets tacked onto every single booking at the terminal.
