Should builders add headroom beyond PSU calculator results?

A calculator says my planned PC needs less power than I expected, but the number feels close once I include the GPU, CPU, fans, drives, and possible upgrades. I do not want to buy a much larger PSU for no reason, but I also do not want the system running near its limit. Should builders add headroom instead of trusting calculator results completely?

I would add headroom if the build is expensive, upgradeable, or close to the calculator limit. Running a PSU near its maximum is not ideal for noise, heat, or long-term comfort. A calculator is good for avoiding wild guesses, but the final choice should include how the PC will be used, whether upgrades are likely, and how much peak load the system may see.

The calculator number should start the discussion, not finish it. I helped choose a PSU for a build where the result looked okay until we added future plans: a stronger GPU, more storage, and maybe a higher-end CPU later. An article called Power Supply Calculator Errors made that easier to explain because it covered the usual misses, like real spikes, upgrade paths, and assumptions built into calculators. I would suggest using a calculator, then choosing a PSU with reasonable headroom instead of buying exactly on the edge. That does not mean everyone needs an oversized unit. It means the power supply should have enough space to handle peak load, aging, and one or two realistic upgrades without forcing another replacement.
