Step Seven - Al-Anon

Step Seven - Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

From How Al-Anon Works For Families and Friends of Alcoholics - pg.57 (copyright 1995 by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., Limited use by express written permission of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.)

...even after we accept the fact that we need the assistance of a Higher Power, many of us try to figure out exactly what we need and hand our Higher Power a list of tasks to fulfill on our behalf. This is not humility: this is self-will. True humility is based on letting go of self-will and relying instead on the will of our Higher Power. Again, we admit that our own resources have let us down and we need help. To ask for such help is to take a huge leap of faith--to truly place ourselves, our future and our actions in the care of God.

Love and hugs - Dot

After being humiliated by the a, step seven was hard for me to understand until I read the Plaque on Humility that Dr. Bob kept on his desk. It starts out - "Perpetual quietness of heart"--- This made sense to me as the program had given me a little of that quietness inside, at times, when all was turmoil around me.

In the beginning I had no clear feeling of what my Higher Power was. I thought of my own father who had loved me unconditionally and said my prayer to him - that I was willing to have my shortcomings removed and please help me.

Changing is now a process for me. I become aware of what needs to be changed - I accept it and the fact that I can't do it alone - then comes the action. I ask my Higher Power for help.

Love you all - Dot

Step Seven - Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

"'Humbly'..means seeing myself in true relation to my fellow man and to God." Lois' Story

True humility is measured by my willingness to do my part in relationship with God and other human beings.  I learn humility in Step One when I admitted that I was powerless.  In admitting my powerlessness, I also acknowledge a power greater than myself, and for me, that power is God.  By the time I reached this step, I have become aware of what is and what is not my responsibility.  I have done my footwork to the best of my ability and now humbly ask God to remove from me whatever might me standing in the way of His will for me.

Yours in recovery - Shimo (Jeri)
