It's affecting my children

Need your help and support and advice regarding my husband.  His drinking  is affecting our children.  He yells, is impatient, and yet wonders why they are losing respect for him.  I too am naturally frustrated.  Am trying hard to accept Step 1 but my stomach churns when he is so nasty to the kids.  If I interfere I take the brunt of his ugly behavior.

I will not accompany him to many social events due to his drinking, and he gets mad at me for not going places with him.

Thanks for hearing me out.

Hi jillin - Welcome - I have no kids so can't say what worked for me - but I can share with you what worked for one of my Al-Anon friends.

When the shouting started she took her kids away from the situation. She wouldn't argue with the a - she would say to the kids - lets go (for a walk - for a ride - to grandma's - for ice cream) whatever could work for you. When he realized he would be left alone he stopped shouting.

For me, the First Step was the hardest. I didn't want to be powerless but nothing I did had worked for a lot of years so I accepted the fact that I was powerless. Acceptng was one thing - actually doing was not easy because it meant changing a lot of things about me.

So keep coming back - it will get better.

Love and hugs - Dot
