Step Ten - Al-Anon

Step 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

From: Paths to Recovery pg. 102 (copyright 1997, by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. Limited use by express written permission of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.)

If we have been thorough and honest in our work in Steps One through Nine, we have begun a process to clear away much of the damage of our past. We have turned our defects of character over to our Higher Power: now we apply continual effort to change our old behaviors for the better. We have begun to take care of ourselves and our needs: instead of reacting to life and the alcoholic, we act on our own behalf. With Step Ten we try to keep our slates clean in order not to slip back into self-destructive patterns. Slips are likely to occur during times of stress, when it is natural to retreat into old, defensive behaviors. Recovery does not cure us of every human imperfection or eliminate all pain in our lives. But it gives us the tools to deal with our problems and to continually work to improve ourselves.

How is this Step working for you?

Step Ten is an important Step in my daily program. Before I go to sleep each night, I try to review my day honestly and decide if I did the best I could fr that day.

Do I need to make changes in my attitudes, actions or reactions. I can be impatient and react to situations rather than waiting to see if any action is necessary.

If I have been wrong and harmed someone and didn't make amends at the time I need to go to that person as soon as possible

I'm still not always ready to admitt I'm wrong - sometimes I need to go back to Step Five and share it with my sponsor. She always sets me straight.

The program has given me the freedom to be wrong and the courage to admitt it and make the necessary amends.

Step Ten is the step that keeps peace within my heart and serenity in my mind. Each night I review how my day went and thank my HP for all the good things that did happen.

When I have not been the best person I can be I feel uncomfortable in my own skin. I get this knawing gut feeling that lets me know that I have not behaved in an acceptable manner. To me this is my HP talking to me. Telling me that in my review I should take responsibility for my bad behavior and make amends. That feeling of discomfort or dis-ease can only be removed by my making amends to where ever it is due. I stay away from self justification and self rationalization for my behavior. I can be accountable for my actions. I can accept responsiblity.

That is my growth. I find it also aids me in my ability to get along with others. It aids me in being able to let go of any resentments that may present themselves.  Only thru the step work will I continue to grow and be a better person. I am guided by my HP and sponsor.

For me Step 10 teaches me to deal with things immediately instead of  procrastinating.  By PROMPTLY admitting we were wrong, we set up a health path instead of building resentments and passing blame.  This step reinforces the importance of lookig within. Since I did step 4 the first time, I love this step because I hated how many character defects I had to release.  By following step 10 regularly i keep the "garage" clear for the good stuff.
