Step 2

Came to believe that a power greater then ourselves could return us to sanity.

Just what is this power greater then ourselves?

I choose to call this power God. God is the nature of life and all living things. This power God, created the miracle of creation with all of its natural beauty and force, and all living things including gods most precious handiwork: human beings. The nature of all living things includes the makeup of our thoughts as well as the introspection of all those whom we engage or who engage in us. Yes God, our higher power speaks to each of us through our own thoughts and the influence of our fellows.  Although we have God given free will, it is our awakening to Gods nature that we can decipher Gods will through our own reflection.

Willingness to believe in Gods influence on our thoughts and will is the essence of accepting that such a power could and would restore us to sanity. As we human beings interact with a host called life, we encounter a vast requirement for making choices. Some choices are reactive, and others are proactive. Reactions should lead to deliberate choices, just as deliberation is required to plan and make positive decisions. Collaboration with such a higher power is a requirement to live a life devoid of fear, chaos, prejudice, self-destruction, insanity, remorse and hopelessness.

To align our free will with Gods will for us is the most effective process of dealing with lifes burdens. Although we possess free will and thought, we cannot achieve our potential without freeing ourselves from our malignant state of selfishness. Such a state limits us from the benefits of willingness toward growth and spirituality. Our spirit is fragile, and requires nourishment from the nature of life and the heart of others, collectively contributing towards our happiness as well as our mastery of energy and industry. Humans are not defined by their limitations; but defined by Gods intentions for us. We must be willing to ask for Gods help and blessings, knowing that Gods work must be our own.

Thanks for that ...I have come to believe God of my understanding as an energy that is always present. I want to have complete trust and access at all times (if I remeber this!).
I know what happens in my life is beause of my God's benevolence; whether I see it as a good happening or a bad happening. My God is never tricky, cruel or confusing. My God accepts my gratitude and my forgetfullness when I don't access the energy and strength.
When I took away the fear factor of God of my childhod understanding, I came to believe this. It took many years in Al-Anon. I love thinking about this Step and reading Pathways to Recovery on Step 2.
