I am new here also and just at step one. admitting I am powerless over alcohol means believing that I can only control myself and my emotions. I have no control over my aw or how she feels. nor do I want to. I've spent way too much time worrying about upsetting her and causing her to drink, about what will happen the next time she decides to drink. if I am truly powerless then that means I am free to take care of myself and do the things I need to do to do that even if it upsets her or inconveniences her. it is very new to me to put myself first as I have always been the caretaker. Now when she drinks I feel confident that it is not somethhing I have done or not done that has caused it. I can't have been the cause because I am powerless over alcohol and her use of it.

There is a second part to step one which say ....and my life had become unmanageable.
I've found it really useful to know that if my life becomes unmanageable its because I have lost my focus on me and started obsessing over other people, place or things.
For me working step one is about refusing to have my head hijacked and allow others to live in there instead of me, rather than with me.
Its so easy to slip back....because I know I am a caring person, a people pleaser, a caretaker.
I can quickly find myself out of balance
and need to return to step 1
I am powerless. Its not my business. I am trying to taken responsibility for something that belongs to someone else. I am hiding from fixing me but paying all my attention to someone else.
