Step 7 for ACoA

7. Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.

The Beatles:

Help!

You know, I need someone!

Help!

- John Lennon and Paul McCartney

First, as always, read "God" as "Higher Power" if you have issues with religion.

Next, while we have to do as much as we can to free ourselves from our problem, we have to acknowledge and accept that if we could have cured ourselves entirely by ourselves, then either we would have already done it or, even worse, we said we wanted to cure ourselves but didn't really want that.

So assuming that we didn't lie about wanting to free ourselves, we're going to need help to change.  Whether it's a deity stepping in or just having an environment like our forum to hold you accountable to your stated desire, you need to seek and ask for the help.

aww Something I have been thinking about for months- about other people in various 12 step programmes who seem to be stuck on Step 7- they can't let go. So, okay I pin up one of my own slogans- take your own advice.

I can look at this step today with fresh eyes. This year I have spent time meditating on the first word- humbly. I don't want false humility, as much as I don't want self-righteousness. I have a feeling both things more or less amount to the same thing. I do not have to be picture perfect. But, if I can choose i can be good and getting better... I can aspire to thongs, and I can aspire to various states of being.

Well, I could aspire to thongs, instead of things... keeping it simple here might just be an asset! smile

Thanks James smile
