Adult Children of Alcoholics Step 11

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understand God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry it out.

As always, replace God with Higher Power if the word bothers you.

The purpose of this step is to attune you to your greater world.  As a part of our dysfunctional upbringing, we often develop a disconnect with our surroundings, having been told things were contrary to how you were experiencing them or perceiving them.  This step is our realigning with larger forces and purposes.  In a way, this is you regaining your spiritual sanity.

I think this is one step that people comfortable with God in their life can work at any time. Since my short version of steps 1-3 is I can't, He can, think I'll let Him..... there is a lot of conscious turning things over (after I realize how much my life sucks when I try to be God in my own life and everyone else who will get on that bus with me.)

But this problem based communication is like only going home to see the folks when I need money or to do my laundry. I'm in my 50's. Folks are dead, but I'm still treating God that way sometimes. I know He loves me. I know He's there, but I'm so busy I can't see straight some days.

I think this may become my "before I get out of bed" step, so that I make sure I'm properly aligned and communicating with God from the get go so my life doesn't wander off without me and lead me into despair as I spend my time trying to play catch up and find some time some where to squish God into it.
