Food Addiction

Hi Everyone, my name is Sharon, age 50, clean and sober 20+ years, battling a few things right now, specifically rampant food addiction and physical illness and pain meds.  I am looking for people working the 12 steps to talk to about these issues.  Anyone working the steps through food addiction?   Anyone with chronic illness or chronic pain and taking pain meds or learning how to use pain meds while sober?

Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

In Recovery,

Sharon

hi drsharon , welcome , yes I have used 12 step for food problems a little bit , it hasn't been my main focus though so I don't really feel I'm brilliant on that topic , but I find these groups work well for most problems and yes it has improved things regarding food , and I'm sure you can use these groups to help with painkiller usage too , depending on how much you're using , eg if you're a heavy user you might try the NA group whereas lighter users of things can find Alanon, ACOA , CODA , Naranon etc enought to handle their level of addiction to things ,

anyway look forward to reading more , lol Vickyr x

my original contact with the twelve step program was with oa in fla and it was working for me but then i moved and go out of touch with the program.  I am a very addictive person in general after a car accident I was overusing drugs and alchol but my drug of choice has always been food.  I have been getting a handle on the food issue and guess what happended I moved to an area that has casinos in the town and started gambling and I have went thru all my savings and have borrowed to the limit.  I finally had to turn to my higher power and admit to him and to my family about my problem.  I thought it was time to start the twelve steps all over again.  Since I am not truly a candidate for OA I hope this forum is alright for me.  In Florida we had a meeting called Woman in Reovery.  All the women in that meeting different addictions but we were united in the fact that we new working a good program could help us recover.  Rioght now I have hit rock bottom.  For the past year I have been lying and practically stealing from my family and it will take me a while to recover financially.  They only thing they asked  of me was to ask for help from someone it I needed it and to promise to stay out of the casinos.  I hope I can get some help here with working my program.  Can someone explain how it works in working the steps.

Dear Sharon,

Well, you sound like a gal similar to me. Chronic Pain has reasons like me having it, there is a root cause. One thing is that I am a "REAL FIBROMYALGIA PATIENT," and Chronic Fatigue Immune Disfunction Syndrome, I was diagnosed 20 years ago when I weighed 128 pounds and I was a single parent. I had ,had multiple symptoms for years prior to that. All the Doctors were bafled and I started to drink heavier because I wasn't getting any releif.

The symptoms are irritable bowel, with cramping, gas, Constipation or the other symptoms, never are my bowels consistant. Severe pain in my sides, upper legs, low back, chest, upper back, and I have a difficult time breathing. I couldn't walk today after overworking. I had this happen for longer durations and I have been disabled unable to see or walk for upto one year.

I am a Recovered ALcoholic, drug addict from hard drugs, and smoker. I went COld-Turkey 13 years ago for 3 months until I couldn't stand the pain then I ran to A.A. for my Step work. I have since come to "THe LORD."

I have worked the Steps several times over for various things. Dr's put you on medications for a reason. GOd doesn't give us a Spirit of Fear, Guilt, hate, judgement. After my husband and the Doctors that know I am an ALcoholic and drug addict that has Recovered the last 13 plus years, all of them have discussed my Health no one butts in. Not even me. I don't get releif from the pain.

I have gained 45 lbs since I was married due to my unhealthy eating habits, health, medications, pain, lack of strenuous excercise. I have been "Blessed" with a husband now that understands me, my health and it doesn't matter. I hate it. I just ate an entire 1/2 gallon of sugarless ice cream between yesterday and today. I am in pain and can't walk so I didn't care. Medications don't take the pain away.

"I LOVE THE LORD" with all my heart, I also struggle with my FLESH, THE WORLD, and SATAN. Step One, Two, and Three are turning it over to a GOd whom I understand. Mine is GOD. It's the leveling of your PRIDE. Step 4 is making a list of PEOPLE WE HURT, 5 is CONFESSION with someone we TRUST, a Sponsor, Pastor, Minister. So on.

We all need someone else of the SAME SEX to do this with. It is HEALING! I AM ALWAYS HONORED TO HELP MY FELLOW WOMAN. NOT ANOTHER MAN. IT ISN'T HEALTHY.

Love BLessed
